On Tuesday, April 2, that notorious star of classroom, RV and international cruising presents his take on the alternative denizens of the North Olympic Peninsula.  Jim Fisher, aka J. R. Engels, will enthrall us with his imaginative and tongue-firmly-in-cheek tales.  Wine on the Waterfront in Port Angeles is the venue, his reading begins at 7:00 p.m. - be there or be square. (boy does that date ME!)
North Coast Writers celebrate April Fools Day with An Evening with Jim and J.R., a tongue-in-cheek look at lesser-known denizens of the Olympic Peninsula.Locally celebrated educator, writer and poet Jim Fisher will present his first novel, The Adventures of J.R. Engels in the Great Pacific Northwest, on Tuesday, April 2, at Wine on the Waterfront, at The Landing, 115 E. Railroad Avenue in Port Angeles.  The reading begins at 7:00 p.m., doors open at 6:30.

The free public event will feature a contemporary view of some of the legendary figures coloring local lore.  J. R. takes a look at grandmotherly vampires, Sasquatch, gay cows, king salmon, Roosevelt elk and other phenomena in a humorous collection of improbable tales from the Pacific Northwest.

The Adventures of J.R. Engels is the product of twenty years of J.R. stories, now assembled into Fisher’s first novel.  “J.R. is a bit challenged when it comes to hunting and fishing, but is willing to try anything, no matter how clumsily he stumbles through the experience,” according to Fisher.

 

Jim Fisher is a self-described “semi-retiring sometimes prose writer and sometimes poet” professor from the English Department at Peninsula College in Port Angeles.  He was the long-time facilitator of First Tuesday readings promoting local and regional writing talent.  The series was the predecessor to the current North Coast Writers events. 

 

Fisher is a transplanted Californian who had a 25-year business career with Procter and Gamble in Long Beach. A plant closure allowed him to return to school at California State University, Long Beach and the University of Southern California for graduate work, followed by a 20-year teaching career.

 

Since his retirement, Fisher has devoted much of his time to travel with his wife, Ann Elizabeth.  They lived one quarter in Guilin, Guangxi Province, China, where Fisher was the exchange professor from Peninsula College to the Guilin University of Electronic Technology.  He has taught in Egypt, South Africa, Holland, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, and the entire Mediterranean from Barcelona to Istanbul.  Their journeys bring color and additional humor to Fisher’s work.  When not traveling, the couple lives in Sequim and at nearby Lake Sutherland.
